AI Prompt for Competitor Analysis That Finds the Gaps They Are Missing
Most competitor analysis lists what the other team does well. That is fine, but it does not help you much. The useful part is different: what they are not doing. Which audiences they ignore. Which pricing tiers they skip. Which content topics they leave open. Which channels are wide open.
This prompt asks ChatGPT for those gaps first, then turns them into three things you can act on.
The Prompt
Act as a competitive intelligence analyst who has reviewed 50+ SaaS and startup websites. I will give you a competitor's URL, a short description of my business, and what I am hoping to find.
Give me a gap analysis, not a generic overview.
Use these sections:
1. Their positioning in one sentence
State what they promise and who they say they serve. Strip out marketing language.
2. Their three visible strengths
Name only what is clearly visible from their site or positioning. Keep it brief. Example: "They have a simple three-step onboarding." Avoid praise.
3. Five gaps they are leaving open
List things they are not doing that I could do. Cover areas like:
- audience segments they ignore
- content topics they miss
- pricing tiers or packaging options they skip
- workflows or features they do not solve
- channels or geographies they do not cover
For each gap, explain why it matters and what kind of demand may be left on the table.
4. Pricing analysis
Answer these questions:
- What do they charge?
- Is their price high or low for the product type?
- Are there buyers priced out?
- Are power users paying too little?
- Is there an obvious untapped package?
5. Content gaps
List topics, formats, or questions they are not answering. Be specific.
6. Social media blind spots
Which platforms are they missing? Which content formats are they not using? What engagement opportunities are they leaving on the table?
7. Three opportunities for me
Based on the gaps above, give me the three highest-impact moves I could make right now. Rank them by effort to implement versus likely impact.
My competitor:
[COMPETITOR URL OR COMPANY NAME]
My business:
[WHAT YOU DO IN TWO SENTENCES]
What I want to find:
[THE SPECIFIC GAP YOU WANT, OR "FIND THE BIGGEST ONE"]
Rules:
- Be specific. "They need better content" is not useful. "They do not publish pricing and their buyers ask about it" is useful.
- Do not invent facts. If you cannot confirm something from the URL, say: "Verify this."
- Focus on moves I can make. Keep observations out unless they lead to action.
- No filler. No "the competitive landscape is dynamic." Just the analysis. How to Use
- Copy the prompt into ChatGPT.
- Fill in the three bracketed sections.
- Read the gaps section first. That is where the useful answers are.
- Pick one or two opportunities and turn them into tasks.
- Verify anything that says “Verify this.”
What You Get
- Five specific gaps to explore
- A pricing review that looks for untapped tiers
- Content gaps you can fill with posts or pages
- Social media angles they are not using
- Three ranked opportunities you can act on
Why This Prompt Works
It asks for gaps before strengths. That is the order that matters when you are trying to find room to grow.
It also forces pricing into the analysis. Many competitor reviews skip pricing entirely, even though it is often the easiest place to find an opening.
The final section turns research into action. You get three moves, ranked by effort and impact, instead of a long list of observations.
